From the old to the new. I upgraded SlapShot.net.nz this evening from SMF 1.1.14 to the latest bbPress plugin for WordPress. I’d been running an out of date, unpatched, insecure SMF installation for well over a year now. Plus I haven’t been doing any backups of it. By moving it to the bbPress plugin I can now run it on the same infrastructure I use for the rest of my sites and hence keep things a little more under control. SMF isn’t quite as feature rich as I’d like, but I understand WordPress a lot more and have infrastructure and systems in place for handling it, so the cost on my time will be much less. My other option was to kill off the forum, which I really didn’t want to do, even though it’s mostly a ghost town these days as people have migrated towards Facebook to discuss hockey in NZ these days.

Here’s the interim look for it as I needed to convert it to run on the phpBB3 software first (there’s no direct SMF -> bbPress converter).

The conversion to bbPress went okay. It takes a while, but works well.

Here’s the default look of bbPress. Unfortunately at this point the topics/forums appeared to be a bit munged. Thankfully it fixed itself later on in the importation process.

And here is the final view of the forum. It’s a little boring looking, but at least it’s all secured and stashed permanently for archival reasons.

I have a minor problem. The Comment Errors plugin I wrote a while back is broken. I’m not sure why it’s broken, but I suspect it is related to a change in WordPress core, so I’m going to discontinue it until I come up with a better solution.

My current plan

1. Remove all the functionality
2. Add an admin notice alerting users that the plugin no longer works and they should remove it or find another solution
3. Remove the plugin from WordPress.org

The problem

The only way I know to remove the plugin from WordPress.org is to remove the SVN repository, but in doing that, it would break the upgrade to show the admin notice.

Any solutions out there?

I wondered why some of the bread tasted so nasty when I moved to Norway. It turns out it was only half baked!

I didn’t realise this was the problem until looking at the side of a packet today and reading “halvstekt” which means “half cooked”!

I had to write a 125+ word letter to a friend in Norwegian for my language class. Here is the result …

Jeg håper at du hadde en bra helgen!

Jeg gikk til Sognsvann for løpt i helgen. Jeg realisert etter jeg reiste bort fra hjemme at min nøkler var i leiglighet! Jeg sendte en melding til leiglighet Facebook gruppen og Charlotte sa at hun skal bli hjemme i tre timer. Så, jeg gikk til Sognsvann og løpt for langt tid! Jeg løper vanligvis for 30 minutter, men jeg løpt for over en timer på lørdag! Jeg var veldig trøtt etter det! Det var veldig kaldt i T-bane til hjemme.

Når jeg var hjemme, vi hadde øl for Karls bursdag fest. Vi hadde veldig morsomt tid. De spurte til meg å snakke på norsk. De tror jeg var veldig morsomt når jeg snakke på norsk. Jeg tror skal jeg ikke løp for en timer og drikker øl etter igjen. Jeg tror det er ikke så bra ide! Jeg gikk til soverom til svare spørsmål på netsiden, men våknet opp 4 klokka på sove i klær og med lyset.

Jeg tror jeg skal ha mindre interessant tid neste helgen. Jeg trenger mindre aksjon for meg.

Jeg løpt 6.7 km i Oslo snø i dag.
